Jaime A. Alves is an Associate Professor of Black studies and the coordinator of the Black Cities Lab of the Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies (CLAIR) at UC Santa Barbara. He is the author of The Anti-Black City: Police Terror and Black Urban Life in Brazil (University of Minnesota Press, 2018). His upcoming book (tentatively titled Vida Digna: Precarity, Refusal, and Abolition in the Colombian City) provides an in-depth analysis of how Black struggles for the right to urban life redefine the contours, the premises, and the imagination of cities as settled geographies.
