A Look at Singapore: The Green-Branded City-State
Isabella Genovese critically explores Singapore’s transformation into a globally celebrated “City in Nature,” moving beyond the city’s iconic green landmarks to investigate how everyday residents interact with the green spaces around them. Genovese highlights the city’s impressive environmental planning while questioning who truly benefits from this green agenda and revealing how Singapore’s celebrated eco-urbanism often obscures the racialized labor and social inequities that sustain it. Migrant workers, who build and maintain these lush landscapes, are systematically excluded from the green spaces they help create. This portrait of Singapore challenges dominant narratives of sustainability, raising urgent questions about justice, accessibility, and environmental inclusion in green-branded urban futures
